Volleyball Seasons End on a Tremendous High Note!

A long and exciting volleyball season ended this past weekend, and what a season it has been!

Our 6/7 volleyball teams ended their season with the Knights of Columbus Tournament hosted by Cedars and including the local Catholic Independent Schools and Westside Academy. Lots of games with lots of noise and in the end our grade 7 girls teams finished second! Thank you to the coaches: Mark Hiller, Tammy Bluemink, Angie Popovic, Leah Paulsen, Kyla Bailie and Charla Wilkins!

We had two Grade 8 teams and both won medals at their respective District Championships. The boys team came away with the third place bronze medal while the girls team rose to the occasion and won the gold medal championship trophy!! Well done and a BIG THANK YOU to boys’ coaches Jessey Church and Mr. Akehurst and Staff Sponsor Mrs. Akehurst and girls coach Mrs. Tuininga for a memorable season!

For the first time in years we had two junior boys teams. The Junior A Boys were primarily grade 9 boys and coached by Noah Podolski. They faced some challenging times playing strong teams made up mostly of grade 10s but they held their own throughout the season. The Junior B Boys were coached by Caleb and Brooklyn Wilson and they ended the season with a third place finish in their District Championships at Quesnel Junior School.

Under the leadership of coaches Krystal Rempel and Michelle Karpenko, the Junior Girls improved by leaps and bounds throughout the year to finish 4th in their Districts. Highlights included defeating eventual champion Duchess Park pool play at Districts. Both coaches were thrilled at how the girls finished the season!

For the 14th straight season our Senior Girls captured their Zone Championship led by Tournament MVP Bella M. and First Team All-star Amaya W. They went undefeated and entered Provincials ranked 10th in the province and while they did not finish as well as they would have liked they won their last two matches and Bella M. was chosen as the top libero of the tournament! Coaches Jeff Ludditt and Hailey Gilkerson were proud of the girls and the way they played all year and finished the season.

Finally, our Senior Boys team was ranked in the top 4 all season for A Boys Volleyball in BC! They won the Senior Boys Kodiak Classic for the first time in Cedars’ history, went undefeated in winning yet another Zone Championship, and ended up #1 in the province as they entered Provincials. They went undefeated in pool play and won all their playoff matches on their way to the finals versus Unity Christian. In a thrilling 5 set match, they won the provincial Championship for only the second time in school history. Ryan C. was chosen as a first team all-star and Sam N. was selected as the Tournament MVP! Coaches Frank Crosina and Carter Karpenko did an amazing job of preparing these boys for a truly memorable season! WOOHOO!!!

All in all it was a great year for Cedars Volleyball and now it’s onto basketball!
