National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The province of BC passed legislation in March 2023 to make this day a statutory holiday – enshrining the day in law to ensure all people have the opportunity to commemorate the history and legacy of the residential school system each year (www2.gov.bc.ca).
Cedars will be providing students, staff, and families opportunities for learning and reflection throughout the month of September, and conducting specific T&R assemblies on Thursday, Sept 28th for our elementary and high school students. Stay tuned for invitations to reflect with us!
Cedars (last Spring) also decided to mark the statutory holiday on Friday, Sept 29th to allow reflection time and space ahead of community events on September 30th. We also made this decision in light of a school ProD that is planned for Friday, Oct 6th. Observing the stat on Sept 29th allows for optimal learning continuity (three 4-day weeks) and a longer, 4-day Thanksgiving weekend for families.
We do recognize that many businesses will be observing the statutory holiday on Monday, Oct 2. We published our school calendar last Spring to ensure families had sufficient time to arrange child care accordingly. Please note that Monday, Oct 2 will be a day in session at Cedars.
