23/24 Basketball Season Wrap-Up

Senior Girls Provincials a Rousing Success!

Our Senior Girls Basketball team went into the 1A Provincial Championships as the North Central Zone silver medalists and ranked #8 of 16 teams, the first team since 2017 to represent Cedars at Provincials. They played #9 Charles Bloom in their first game and came away with a solid 60-46 victory. They then lost consecutive games to #1 Pacific Christian and #4 St. Ann’s before facing #11 Immaculata in their final game. It was a back and forth game with Immaculata relying almost exclusively on one player for scoring – she sank 12 threes on her way to scoring 47 of Immaculata’s 52 points. In the end however, the balanced scoring and tough 4th quarter defence of Cedars prevailed leading to a 59-52 win and 7th place overall. Congratulations to the whole team on a great tournament, but especially graduating players Gabby Wagner, Chizaram Okebie and captain Amy Larson, who got to play at Provincials despite an injured ankle. And a BIG THANK YOU to coaches Jordan Johnson and Zach Wagner for their time and energy in helping shape a great year of Eagles senior girls basketball.

Senior Boys End Provincials on a Solid Note

The Cedars Eagles Senior Boys Basketball Team represented Cedars admirably as the North Central Zone Champions at the 1A Provincials in Langley March 6-9. Ranked #10 going into the tournament, they faced #7 Similkameen in their first game and what a game it was! At the end of regulation it was tied 59-59 and in the 5 minute overtime period Similkameen prevailed 68-66. It was a tough loss for the boys but they needed to regroup since they had another game the next day. Unfortunately they came up short again losing to Brooks Westshore 66-61 despite Ryan Crosina’s 34 (39?) points. Their third game ended differently with the Eagles coming out on top over North Central rival McBride 83-74. They faced Campbell RIver Christian in their final game this time to see who finishes the tournament in 13th. Cedars started off slowly and found themselves down by 12 but they chipped away , got the lead only to see it slip away. In the end they pushed back hard and prevailed 68-62. Overall it was a good tournament, and with a bounce here or there Cedars could have finished in the top 8. It was the final high school tournament for seniors Markus Buhler, Cole Staves, Joe Redden, Jonah Oliver (who was too sick to play), Olu Okebie, and Ryan Crosina, who averaged 30 points in the tournament. Thank you to Coaches Jeff Ludditt and Frank Crosina for a successful year, guiding Cedars to their third consecutive zone title.

Elementary Basketball Year-end Tournament

Cedars had four teams (Two boys and two girls) competing in the annual Knights of Columbus tournament hosted by St. Mary’s School March 6-9. All 4 teams were in some exciting close games making for a great finish in the playoffs on Saturday. In the end all teams made the playoffs, but the best Cedars could do was two teams in the semi-finals. However, both the girls Cedars A and boys Cedars A team lost those games. All players improved dramatically over the course of the season, in large part due to the efforts of girls coaches Cody McEwen, Jill Kelsh and Tammy Bluemink and boys coaches Winston Price, Angie Popovic and Leah Paulsen. Thank you all for stepping in to volunteer to coach our players and to teach them valuable lessons on sport and competition.
